White Sulphur Springs, WV (WOAY) – After a top five finish in the U.S. Open last month, one could say big things were coming Xander Schauffele’s way sooner rather than later.
A final round 67 was enough for the 23-year-old to win the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, his first victory on the PGA Tour. It continues the event’s trend of maiden victories for Tour pros.
Sebastian Munoz began the day with a two-stroke lead at 14-under, but struggled on several holes, posting a final round 72 to finish tied for third. Robert Streb had the outright lead at multiple points Sunday, and looked to be in control of his own destiny until a double bogey on 13.
Schauffele birdied both 16 and 18, his tee shot on the par-three final hole stopping just over three feet from the flag; the ensuing birdie took him to -14. Streb’s tee shot on the same hole found the left rough, but a chip-in would’ve forced a playoff; the Shawnee, Kansas native was part of the four-man playoff two years ago.
However, his chip came up short, meaning a tie for second.
Because of their finishes this week, Schauffele, Streb, Munoz, and Jamie Lovemark all qualified for the Open Championship in two weeks at Royal Birkdale.
