WOAY – West Virginia senior quarterback Will Grier announced Saturday he will not play in the Camping World Bowl, as he prepares for the 2019 NFL Draft.
In a statement released Saturday morning, Grier said, “It has been an honor to wear the WVU uniform, and I sincerely thank all of Mountaineer Nation for allowing my family and I to be a part of something so special.” Head coach Dana Holgorsen also released a statement saying he supports Grier’s decision.
Grier, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, arrived in Morgantown in 2016 as a transfer from Florida. After sitting out the 2016 season due to transfer rules, he took over as the starting quarterback in 2017, throwing for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns. He was named the Big 12’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year.
Grier entered 2018 receiving national attention as a potential Heisman candidate, and finished his season with 3,864 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. He was selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
Will Grier will leave Morgantown having reached the top five in multiple WVU categories, including career touchdown passes (71) and passing yards (7,354). He graduated from WVU in December 2017.
West Virginia faces Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando on December 28.
