Volunteer said pregnant pit bull euthanized as it was giving birth

A volunteer at a humane society in Texas said that a pit bull and her puppies were reportedly euthanized while the dog was still in labor.

According to a Facebook post by Dacia Anderson, on May 10 while she was helping an Amarillo-Panhandle Humane society employee complete a walk-through of the facility, she came across a very pregnant pit bull.

“She was friendly, but scared, and jumping up on her for comfort. I looked at her band and notes she had been an owner surrender the previous,” Anderson wrote in her post.

“I then saw an AMW kennel attendant assembling a whelping box and assumed it was being handled, Anderson said. A bit later, I heard that a message had been sent stating G7 was euthanized. She was in labor, and euthanized. An AMW employee later confirmed that it was indeed the same dog. Her last moments, while she lay dying, were spent still trying to clean her newly birthed puppies. Their words, not mine.”

Richard Havens, the Director of Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare said, the dog was reported to be aggressive by the owner according to Havens.

“The owner of the dog in question contacted 911 to state they had a vicious animal that was there’s. We responded after hours, we took the animal into custody and then the following morning, we ended up euthanizing it due to the nature of the call and then the behaviors that we also saw the animal exhibiting,” Havens said.

Havens said it was a matter of public safety because this dog was not an adoption or foster candidate. Anderson did not feel the same the way.

“She was not euthanized before she went into labor, she was not euthanized after. She was euthanized as she was delivering puppies. So, aggressive or not, I don’t know where you can excuse this or say this is why we did it,” Anderson said.

She no longer volunteers at the Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare Center anymore.
