Three Sectional Champions Crowned

WOAY – Three girls basketball sectional champions were crowned Friday, as Woodrow Wilson, Nicholas County, and Summers County will all host regionals next week.

Woodrow Wilson won Class AAA Region 3 Section 2 after a 67-63 win at Greenbrier East. The Lady Flying Eagles were led by 20 points from Sydni Darden and 15 from Victoria Staunton, while Haley McClure scored 24 points for the Lady Spartans. Woodrow Wilson will host St. Albans Tuesday, while Greenbrier East will play at George Washington.

A late run in the second quarter continued into the third quarter as Summers County won 61-35 against Meadow Bridge in Class A Region 3 Section 2. Hannah Taylor led the Lady Bobcats with 19 points, with Taylor Isaac contributing 15. Shauna Harless scored 15 points for Meadow Bridge, which will be at Charleston Catholic Thursday. That same night, Summers County hosts Pocahontas County.

Nicholas County are the winners of Class AA Region 2 Section 2 after defeating Roane County 71-34. Michaela O’Dell led the Lady Grizzlies with 22 points, while Anna Hamilton added 18; the Lady Grizzlies connected on nine three-pointers. The two schools await the result of the Section 1 championship between Lincoln & Bridgeport, which has yet to be played.

In boys basketball, Independence opened Class AA Region 3 Section 1 play with a 53-46 win against Liberty. Kyle Saunders scored 18 points for the Patriots, while Jalen Hudson led the Raiders with 18. Independence will play Oak Hill Tuesday night in Beckley.
