Third-Graders At Brushfork Elementary Receive Free Dictionaries

BRUSHFORK, WV (WOAY) – A local class of third graders took home a valued item and it was all for a good cause.

Members of the Bluefield Rotary Club passed out dictionaries at Brushfork Elementary on Thursday.  This marks the 12th annual effort by the Bluefield Rotary Club, which benefits third-graders all cross elementary schools in Mercer County.

Superintendent Dr. Deborah Akers says this is an effort to motivate children at a young age on their vocabulary skills.

“Vocabulary was a big part of being well spoken and a big part in test scores if you have a very good vocabulary so that is one that we push in the school system to expand their vocabulary,” says Deborah Akers, Superintendent with Mercer County Schools

Akers adds a dictionary is something we can use daily.
