BECKLEY, WV – Recently there have been two Hit and Run accidents leaving one of the victims in critically conditions. What can drivers and pedestrians do to prevent these type of accidents from happening?
Driving is a serious task and it’s important to drive responsibly while behind the wheel. There are laws in place to keep drivers and everyone else on the road safe. Along with the safety of drivers we also have to remember the safety of pedestrians in order to prevent accidents and to keep hit and runs from happening.
” Be vigilante scan where you’re going before you get there that way if there is a walker, pedestrian or bicyclist or anything like that you won’t strike them.” Said Sgt. Jamie Wilhite, Highway safety Coordinator
Most drivers know that The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. Its important for those who are walking to take precautions…
” First thing is try to avoid heavy traffic areas if at all possible. I understand you may need to get somewhere that you can’t avoid that but if you are out make sure you’re wearing visible clothing and at night time it’s not a bad idea to have a flashlight that way you can give the vehicles approaching a signal that you’re there.” Said Wilhite
By following the law, taking precautions, avoiding all distractions being alert and paying attention while driving accidents like hit and runs can be prevented but in a situation where this is not the case here’s what can be done
” If you strike a pedestrian or any type of vehicle accident in general stop in the safest place if its not right there where the accident occurred pull off the side of the rode and if someone hurt def attempt to help them if at all possible but at the very least call 911 as soon as possible that way we can get emergency services to you.” Said Wilhite
so if you are the pedestrian or the driver pay attention, be cautious, be aware of your surrounding but most of all be safe.
