STRASBURG, Va. (WSET) — A Virginia man is facing charges after police said he fled from officers Monday night, throwing a two-year-old boy into a creek during the incident.

The Strasburg Police Department said it happened around 5 p.m. Monday after an officer noticed a stolen car and attempted to pull it over.

Police said the officer saw the man driving with his two-year-old son in his lap.

When the officer stopped the car, the suspect identified as Kyle Sunday, 28, got out and ran.

As officers chased him, one saw him throw the child over an embankment and into a creek.

Police then stopped the chase to rescue the boy, who ended with multiple cuts and bruises due to being thrown in the creek.

Thankfully, the child is okay and was treated by fire and rescue crews at the scene.

Officers picked the search for Sunday back up with help from the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office and Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said a K9 tracked him to a home nearby where he was found hiding in the attic.

The mother of the child, 27-year-old Kristi Ann Letima, told police that Sunday stole her car with her son inside it, but police said they determined that was not the truth.

Sunday was charged with reckless driving, felony eluding police, misdemeanor eluding, seat belt violation, failure to secure a child properly, driving with a suspended license, felony abuse and neglect of a child, felony attempting to maliciously wound a child under 18, fugitive from justice, probation violation out of Prince William County.

Letima was charged with child neglect and endangerment, obstruction of justice, and making a false report to law enforcement.

Police also say a Strasburg officer fired a gun during the incident, which is being investigated by the Virginia State Police.
