Nine Area Golfers Qualify for WV Amateur

WOAY – The fifth of six statewide qualifiers for the West Virginia Amateur was held Wednesday at Fincastle on the Mountain, with nine area golfers qualifying for the championship.

Nick Dent of White Sulphur Springs was the medalist after a round of 71. Also finishing in the top three was Bluefield’s Cole Burgess and Pineville’s Brett Laxton. Laxton, who was the medalist when Wyoming East won the 2016 golf state championship, was named the Mountain East Freshman of the Year last month at Concord.

Also qualifying at Fincastle were Brian Hart (Bluefield), Wyoming East boys basketball head coach Derek Brooks (Mullens), Karson Terry (Peterstown), Jackson Hill (Daniels), Drew Green (Beaver), and Michael Growe Jr. (Pineville)

The final qualifier is scheduled for Friday at Esquire Golf Club in Barboursville. The first round of the WV Amateur Championship is Monday, June 4th at the Greenbrier.
