WOAY – The Mountain East Conference announced Tuesday that WesBanco Arena in Wheeling will host the league’s basketball tournaments in 2019 and 2020, with an option to host in 2021.
The championship had been held at the Charleston Civic Center since 2014, with the WVIAC also holding its tournament in the state capital. However, the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau said Monday it was withdrawing its bid to remain as host.
Two MEC schools – West Liberty & Wheeling Jesuit – are located in the greater Wheeling area, the same number of area schools as Charleston, which has the University of Charleston and West Virginia State.
Both Concord teams qualified for the tournament last week, with Tommy Bolte and Riley Fitzwater each named to the all-tournament teams.
