SMITHERS, WV (WOAY) – This Kroger store opened 25 years ago in 1993. Now the one time bustling grocery store prepares to shut its doors for good. “They don’t have nothing in there anymore” said Richard Coleman Kroger Shopper.
This store in Smithers is Kroger’s smallest with only 18,ooo square feet of space. Over the past several years, the mega grocery chain has seen declining sales here, which is a big reason this store is closing.
“you can’t make no money. Ain’t no use staying open” said Richard Coleman. How long have you been shopping at Kroger’s? “For 50 years we’ve been here since they’ve opened” said Karen Mullins Kroger shopper.
Shoppers tell us this is the only grocery store within a roughly 20 to 30 mile radius. So it was welcomed news when we told you Grant’s Supermarket would be taking over the space.”They’re supposed to put a Grant’s in here so I guess we’ll go to Grant’s” said Karen Mullins.
Grant’s Supermarket stores have been opened since 1949. It’s hoping to have the doors open in the newest town by the beginning of next year.
