Judge Overrules State, Compels Nicholas County School Consolidation

1541

NICHOLAS COUNTY– A Kanawha County Circuit Court judge overruled the West Virginia Board of Education’s decision rejecting the Nicholas County Board of Education’s consolidation plan.

On Friday, Judge Duke Bloom ruled that the state board acted arbitrarily and ordered that the flood consolidation plan passed by the Nicholas board should move forward.

Under the Nicholas board’s plan, five schools would be closed and would be consolidated into two schools.

Richwood High School, Nicholas County High School and the Nicholas County Career and Technical Center would be closed and consolidated into one school. Summersville Middle School and Richwood Middle School also would be closed and consolidated into one school.

The consolidation issue has been a hot topic in Nicholas County with communities deeply divided over the issue.

The state Board of Education will discuss the ruling Thursday and could appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court.
