BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Beckley City Officials will now be voting on whether those who identify as LGBTQ will have added protections in the city.
On Wednesday, December 6, 2018, The Human Rights Commission passed the ordinance which will ban housing and employment discrimination against citizens, based on their sexual orientation.
The ordinance will now go to the Council for a vote.
“The new ordinance modifications would allow gender identity, as well as, gender expression and sexuality to be protected classes. If someone identified a firing for these reasons, there would be recourses on a city level. In 11 different cities in the state of West Virginia, its been recognized that these protections need to exist and don’t similar ordinances have already passed Beckley is just catching up,” said Robert Dunlap, Lawyer
