Former Marshall RB Devon Johnson Passes Away

WOAY – Marshall University has confirmed former running back Devon Johnson has passed away at the age of 25.

The Richlands High school graduate enrolled at Marshall in 2012, and was a key part of the Thundering Herd team that won the Conference USA championship in 2014. That year, he was responsible for 19 total touchdowns (17 rushing, two passing), and ran for a Marshall single-game record 272 yards against Florida Atlantic. He was first team All-Conference USA and a Doak Walker Award semifinalist in 2014, and finished his collegiate career with 25 total touchdowns.

In 2016, Johnson signed with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent, but spent the season on injured reserve. He was waived in the spring of 2017.

Head coach Doc Holliday said Tuesday in a statement, “I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing. Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively. Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”
