Fayetteville Advances to State Tournament

Fayetteville, WV (WOAY) – Fayetteville softball is headed to the state tournament for a second straight year following a 22-14 win against Greenbrier West in the Class A Region 3 finals.

The Lady Cavs won the second game of the best-of-three series 14-4, in a game that started Tuesday but was finished Wednesday due to weather.

Game 3 was scoreless until the third inning, when Ariel Whaples’ home run gave the Lady Pirates (who were the designated away team) a 2-0 lead. Greenbrier West responded with two runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth inning. Fayetteville scored 10 runs in the fifth to take a 12-10 lead.

The back-and-forth contest continued with Greenbrier West taking a 13-12 lead into the seventh inning, before Skylar Richards’ two-run home run put the Lady Pirates in front 14-13. The Lady Cavs extended the game to extra innings, though, with Lilly Bennett’s RBI double.

Fayetteville scored eight runs in the eighth inning to take a 22-14 lead, and was able to hold momentum in the bottom of the inning to win.

The Lady Pirates will play Sherman in the first round of the state tournament next week. Wheeling Central and Moorefield are also in the Class A field.
