BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – As we first reported a couple of months ago, the Beckley YMCA is going through a round of cuts.
It’s already announced it’s cutting the pre-school in March.
“We took a really hard look at the Preschool as a department, its past performance and its enrollment numbers,” YMCA CEO Jay Rist told us in January, adding, “Once our FY2017 financials were available, it was pretty evident the gap had become so bad that it could not continue, which, if it did, would put pressure on the Y as a non-profit charity, and would ultimately make it difficult to sustain our current overall operation.”
The cuts will involve some layoffs. And there is word that there will be more cuts to come.
According to a parent directly involved with the situation, The Y has scheduled a meeting for concerned parents next week. The board has agreed to meet with them on Wednesday, February 14th, 5:30pm – 6:30pm in the sanctuary at the Beckley Presbyterian Church. It’s located at 203 S Kanawha St.
