BECKLEY (WOAY) – The Beckley City Council met on Tuesday night to pass some important Ordinances.
The Council passed the first reading of an Ordinance authorizing the city to purchase the Black Night Country Club for the consideration of $3 million. There still needs to be a second reading of this Ordinance and a public hearing on March 12th for this Ordinance to pass.
The Council also passed a pay increase for officers in the amount of $1500 a year and to increase the starting salary of police officers by $1500 a year as well. Police Chief Christian said this increase will go a long way to retain trained officers.
“What that does is to help us recruit good candidates and lets us be competitive with surrounding agencies, but it also helps us to retain those officers we have gained experiences with,” said Chief Lonnie Christian.
