McDowell Officials Looking for More Money

WELCH– McDowell County officials are looking for money that would allow the county’s sheriff to keep deputies that are slated to be laid off by the end of the year.

County Commission President Harold McBride tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the commission earlier this year asked all offices to cut their budgets, as the county was facing a $600,000 budget shortfall.

Sheriff Martin West has encouraged the public to attend a Wednesday meeting to discuss the proposed $240,000 budget cut that would lead to six deputies being laid off. If the layoffs occur, the department would be left with seven deputies.

McBride says officials are trying to find a better solution, but the sheriff’s department took the largest cut because it’s the office with the largest budget.
