WVU Women Headed to NCAA 2nd Round

WOAY – For the second straight year, West Virginia women’s basketball is headed to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A fourth-quarter run was the key difference as the Mountaineers won 75-62 over Elon on Friday in College Park, Maryland.

The Phoenix led 13-10 after the first quarter, before WVU rallied to take a 28-27 lead into intermission. There would be six lead changes and two ties throughout the game, with the game tied at 53 early in the fourth before the Mountaineers’ 10-0 run to take the lead for good.

Tynice Martin scored 26 points and is the 34th Mountaineer to reach 1,000 career points; she is the third-quickest to reach the milestone. Lanay Montgomery recorded her 20th career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

West Virginia will face Maryland on Sunday in the second round. The Mountaineers are 0-2 all-time against the Terrapins, last meeting in 1981.
