Mountaineers Return to Sweet 16

WOAY – West Virginia men’s basketball is headed back to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament after winning 83-71 over Notre Dame on Saturday in Buffalo, New York.

Playing in the first game of the Round of 32, it was an opportunity for either team to make a statement on a national stage, and the Mountaineers scored the first 10 points of the afternoon, though Notre Dame would rally to keep it close in the late minutes.

However, a balanced offensive game plan from the Mountaineers, led by 24 points from Jevon Carter and 18 points from Daxter Miles, Jr, puts West Virginia in the regional semifinals for the fourth time under current head coach Bob Huggins.

West Virginia will play the West region’s top seed – Gonzaga –  in the Sweet 16 on Thursday evening in San Jose, California. Game time had yet to be determined as of Saturday night.
