Brooks, D’Antoni Remember Don Nuckols

WOAY, video of Dan D’Antoni courtesy of WSAZ – Don Nuckols, the longtime high school basketball coach who led Mullens to five state championships between 1968 and 1984, passed away Thursday at age 78.

Nuckols had a career record of 283-101 with the Rebels.

Many basketball games around the region Thursday and Friday began with a moment of silence in honor of Nuckols.

Herbie Brooks says he learned many lessons from Nuckols, the Mullens star and state champion now an assistant coach for Wyoming East boys basketball.

Marshall men’s basketball Dan D’Antoni also has many fond memories of the coaching legend. Dan graduated several years before Nuckols started coaching at Mullens in 1968, but younger brother Mike D’Antoni – the current head coach of the NBA’s Houston Rockets – was a senior on Nuckols’ first Rebels squad.

Ceremonies celebrating the life of Nuckols have been scheduled for Sunday and Monday in Beckley.
