“Wreaths Across America” To Honor Fallen Veterans In Beckley

443

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)—Each year, our country remembers and honors our fallen veterans during the holiday season by holding wreath-laying ceremonies. What started as one man’s gesture has transformed into a national movement.

On December 16th, wreaths were placed at cemeteries, including Wildwood Cemetery, to honor veterans and those who lost their lives.

At noon, many observed a moment of silence, including a group of Civil Air Patrol cadets, which was followed by laying wreaths on 246 gravestones at Wildwood to acknowledge veterans for their service to our country.

“The folks behind me that are laid to rest here, they paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ellis Vest, a member of Raleigh County American Legion Post 32.

One family came out to participate and shared what the “Wreaths Across America” day means to them during this holiday season.

“This is our second year out here actually helping with this so it’s really an honor to be here and to give back to those who served for our county,” said Michael Plummer, a resident of Raleigh County.

Since Christmas is a time to spend with family, friends and loved ones, “Wreaths Across America” enables family, friends and volunteers to celebrate our heroes and keep their memories alive during the holiday season.
